  • Jeremy’s love of teaching began at age 14 when he began teaching a children’s choir. After he graduated high school, he joined the U.S. Army, and served as a Combat Medic before entering college. After earning a degree in History and Molecular Biology from the University of Arizona, he moved to Taos in 2001 where he began teaching 5th Grade at the Taos Municipal Charter School.

It was at TCS that he developed an appreciation for project based teaching and learning and enjoyed working with his students to create meaningful and authentic learning experiences… teaching by doing. Through these experiences, the intent is that students not only learn new academic material, but also gain a love and independence for learning that lasts a lifetime.

In 2009, he earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and is thrilled to be in the role of Director of the Taos Charter School.

  • Erika Tafoya was born in Southern Indiana and moved to Florida when she was thirteen. She was raised in a family of educators. Erika’s grandmother was a Physics and Chemistry teacher, and together they explored and marveled in the beauty of nature. Erika graduated from the University of Florida (go Gators), with a Bachelors of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology and

Conservation. In addition, Erika participated in several research projects that included the following: global warming studies at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in 1997 and collecting data on diving ducks and environmental contaminants, on the North Bay of San Francisco with the USGS(1999).

In 1999, Erika decided to go back to school and obtain her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of West Florida. She was deeply inspired to share her love of nature and science with the younger generation. Erika moved to the island of Kauai and began her teaching career. Erika spent six glorious years on the island and also gained experience as a literacy coordinator.

Erika moved to Taos in 2008 and has taught preschool yoga at Leaping Lizards, afterschool and summer programs for girls in a program called Girltime, middle school science at TISA for five years, and now teaching 2nd grade at TCS. Erika’s family includes her husband Andy and son Jaxon, who is a student at TCS. Together, they love to be outside as much as possible: mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, cross country skiing, and soaking in the beauty of this incredible land.

  • Ms. Mary worked as a teacher at Anansi Charter School for six years prior to joining Taos Charter in 2022. She also taught at the Penasco Elementary school as the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade science and math teacher.

She is the mother of two lovely girls, Lily and Clara. Her love of working with children has inspired her to coach figure skating, teach skiing, and beginning swimming. She is also an aunt to four awesome young adults.

Ms. Mary is a “mostly, lifelong Taos resident,” with a background in Southwest Archaeology. She loves being active outdoors, and playing with her two giant Great Pyrenees. She also keeps a garden and bees in the summer months.

  • I’ve been the 4th grade teacher at TCS since way back in 2001, and I’m very proud to be a part of this school. I wouldn’t want to teach anywhere else. I grew up in Jamestown, New York, about an hour south of Buffalo. I graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in English Literature, received an MA in Anthropology from the University of New York at Albany, and earned my teaching endorsement from Fort Lewis College in Durango.

Before moving to Taos, I taught 4th and 5th grade for four years on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, NM. Prior to teaching, I worked for several years as a ski patroller and snowmaker in Colorado at Eldora and Telluride. At TCS, I have also served as a member of our school’s Governing Council. In the winter, I’m a lucky chaperone of our weekly Ski and Snowboard Program at Taos Ski Valley, and every year I sponsor the National Geographic Bee for grades 4-8. Academically, I’m passionate about teaching reading and literature, history, culture, geography, and math. My wife Hillary and I don’t have children of our own, but we do have a big 2-year-old Great Pyrenees/ border collie mix named Penelope, who thinks she’s a person. She’s training hard to take her test to become a certified classroom therapy dog, so our students may be seeing “Penny” at school in the coming years. On the weekends, we love to hike, bike, camp, ski, and travel.

Email Mr. Bonner or call him at 575-751-7222 X1004. You can learn more about 4th grade by visiting the Class Blog.

  • Jennifer Martinez has been a New Mexico resident for 20+ years. Before arriving in New Mexico, she was raised in the suburbs of Chicago. She first arrived in New Mexico to join family and attend UNM School of Fine Art. Jennifer met her husband, a Questa native, while at UNM. They now have four children. Jennifer has been self-employed in tourism and worked in event planning and the court system before homeschooling her oldest daughter in second grade. That experience led her to the professional teaching field where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from New Mexico State University.

Jennifer served her first year with Taos Charter School as a Reading Assistant before stepping into the classroom full-time. When she has free time, Jennifer likes to try her hand at tinsmithing and gardening. As a family, the Martinez’ like to hunt, fish, and hike the Carson Forest.

Email Mrs. Martinez or call her at 575-751-7222 X1005.

Mrs. Martinez communicates with her class through Class Dojo, and you will receive the information from her.

  • Avery Blair was born and raised here in Taos. After graduating from Taos High School in 2001, she began her college career in Fort Collins, CO at Colorado State University. After one year, she realized that New Mexico was calling her home and returned to the Land of Enchantment. She received her Bachelor’s in Environmental Education and Communications in 2006 from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Avery loved working for the Forest Service and educating visitors about various environmental issues at the top of the Sandia Mountains. It was in this position where she realized how important education was and how much she enjoyed teaching others. She made the decision to continue her education in the teaching field. Avery received her Master’s in Education with a TESOL endorsement in 2010. She was able to pursue an alternative route to licensure while working in various teaching positions with Albuquerque Public Schools. After completing her education and beginning a family of her own, she returned to Taos to be closer to family.

Mrs. Blair married her high-school sweetheart and fellow Taoseno in 2008. They have a son who attends Taos Charter School and daughter in high school who graduated from Taos Charter School. In her spare time, she enjoys paddle boarding on the Rio Grande, hiking, camping, and snowboarding with friends and family. She has taught 6th grade at Taos Charter School for several years and is grateful to be a part of such a wonderful learning community. She looks forward to meeting her middle school students and continuing to improve herself as a teacher with each new year.

  • Scott Tennant has been voted the BEST teacher at Taos Charter School…well, at least that’s what I tell myself on a daily basis!

Thinking back in time, some of my earliest dreams answering the question, “What do I want to do when I grow up?” have been centered on teaching. Besides wanting very badly to be a firefighter and an astronaut, teaching was always right up there with those other lofty professions. I’m sure that familial encouragement was a big part of it too. For 35 years, my grand-mother, worked for the San Bernadino County Superintendent, my mother was a school psychologist for 25 years, and my father taught special needs and GED programs at the Lewis and Clark State College level for 18 years.

While I always thought that I would make the profession part of my life, I did not want to rush into it too soon. I am a firm believer that to be a good educator, one needs to have real life experiences as an adult that tempers and shapes their beliefs and perspectives about the human condition.

After graduating from high school in ’87 from Tumwater, Washington, college was a temporary and fleeting experience that served only to let me know that I was not ready to continue my learning in the classroom. I eagerly sought other avenues to adulthood. I worked for short stints in New Mexico building spec houses. I lived on a houseboat moored on Lake Union in Seattle. I explored the Aleutian Peninsula, making three meals a day for 125 fish processors in Naknek, Alaska. I was also an expat in Prague, CZ for four years witnessing the rebuilding of Central Europe from the atrophy and slow decline of the Cold War. While I was there, I worked as a production artist for two years at the Prague Business Journal and managed Red Hot & Blues restaurant for two years. After these experiences, I was ready for college. I attended Hunter College CUNY from 1998-2001 and double majored in Political Science and Russian Studies.

I worked my way through college as a freelance production artist in Manhattan and after graduation, I was pondering my next move. I had been married for five years and was a part-time stay at home dad with my first daughter Sally. I was ready for something new and something that would give my family more stability. And then the bombing of the World Trade Center occurred while I was on my way to work. The horrific events of that day still reverberate around the world today and while much about what we collectively believe are truths about the ills of society and citizen responsibilities has been challenged since that time, I was given an opportunity to make positive gifts towards a better future because of it. President Bush (the Junior) authorized a renewed commitment to Americorp and encourage all Americans to reevaluate their role as citizens of this country. I joined Americorp’s TeachNY program at the age of 33 and got my feet wet teaching for three years in impoverished schools within inner-city Brooklyn. That was the most challenging experience of my professional life thus far and frankly, if my wife and I had not relocated to Taos in 2006, I am not sure that I would still be in this field.

I was working on a Masters in Social Studies and Education (nine credits short) when my family relocated to Taos and unfortunately was not able to complete it. After a brief stint at Taos Middle School, I have been at TCS since 2008 loving my job and growing to be a better teacher with every year that passes. In 2015, I received my Masters in School Counseling.

Academic Resume: 2001 BA in Political Science and Russian Studies, Hunter College CUNY; 2015 Masters in School Counseling, Adams State University.

  • Nathaniel Evans was born and raised in Taos, NM. He has been active in education since his return to Taos after receiving a BS in Biology from Antioch College in Ohio. After receiving his degree, he was eager to come back to Taos and serve his community. In 2004, Nathaniel began teaching 7th and 8th grade math and science at Taos Charter School, and he became actively involved in the community. He has served on the budget committee of Taos Charter School, helping to manage a budget of over $1 million for the last eight years, as well as serving on the Governing Council for six years. Nathaniel was recently appointed to the Math and Science Advisory Council for the New Mexico Department of Education, and he works closely with STEM professionals from LANL, Sandia National Labs, UNM, the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), the state Public Education Department, and school districts across the state focusing on enriching and guiding STEM education in New Mexico.

A highly-qualified educator and National Board Certified teacher in Early Adolescent Mathematics, Nathaniel received a Golden Apple Award for New Mexico in 2012 and was awarded the Best of Taos Educator in 2014.

With a lifelong passion for service, Nathaniel served as a Level 1 Firefighter and EMT Basic for four years, both in Yellow Springs, OH, and here in Taos. He worked for Big Brothers Big Sisters for seven years, running the Taos program, and has been involved in truancy prevention for students with Juvenile Probation Office referrals. He was also the Health Clinic Coordinator at Taos High School.

In 1991, Nathaniel spent three months in Thailand and Nepal, on a trip focused on building a school in Pokhara, Nepal. The trip opened his eyes to true poverty. “I saw children younger than I walking barefoot behind their fathers carrying rocks on their backs,” he said. From that moment on, he has had a deep appreciation for the privileges that come with being a US citizen. That trip also began a love for travel that continues today. He traveled to Mexico for a Spanish language immersion class in 1997; he is proficient in Spanish. He worked for Desarollo Integral Del Familia in Oaxaca in 2001, serving underprivileged citizens of Mexico by providing basic first aid and CPR training to the surrounding Colonias. He continues to travel today as often as he can, but he is always glad to return home to Taos.

In 2011, Nathaniel met his wife Montserrat Oyanedel Tolmo up in the Ski Valley, where she was doing a work and travel program through her Chemical Engineering College in Valparaiso, Chile. They fell in love and traveled to Chile for 6 weeks, when he met her family and asked for her hand in marriage. They began the immigration process and now own a house together on Cruz Alta.

Nathaniel loves Taos and is an avid hiker, skier, fisherman and outdoorsman. He counts himself lucky to have been born in such a pristine, beautiful and unique place.

  • Welcome back to another school year!

I’ve been teaching students for a decade now! My first 5 years I taught in the general education classroom and special education throughout my career.

I received my Master’s Degree in Special Education in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic. I began my career in Questa and then moved to the Taos Municipal Schools where I had been employed for the last seven years. I decided to make the change to Taos Charter in August 2022. I am very excited for this new opportunity. I truly love what I do and will be an advocate for your child in the classroom.

When you don’t see me in school, I am a mom to 3 children, Estevan, Ian, and Hayleigh. I’m also a firefighter wife and a dog mom to Thor and Nala. In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym.

  • Educating a child is an important responsibility. Teachers have the ability to influence and change a child’s life forever. Stephanie’s goal is to create a learning environment that is both exciting and challenging and to bring out the true potential of each child. Sometimes this type of learning does not take place in the classroom so she tries to provide opportunities for children to explore the world beyond school and even Taos. Teaching is both meaningful and challenging and Stephanie feels fortunate to be part of the Taos Charter School community where she has the opportunity to work with a talented staff and enthusiastic and dedicated students.

Stephanie’s life has not always been about teaching. Her career started in banking after she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Communications from Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. After many years of feeling a void in her professional life, she decided to return to school and follow a lifelong dream to become a teacher. Stephanie received a Master’s Degree in Education/Special Education from the University of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona. She holds a level III license in New Mexico for Special Education and has a Gifted endorsement. Stephanie’s training continued for two years, and she is certified at the teacher level as a dyslexic therapist. Stephanie started teaching at Ranchos Elementary where she taught Special Education and Gifted for seven years. She then moved to Arroyos Del Norte Elementary for two years and moved to Taos Charter School for the 2015-16 school year.

Stephanie feels that Taos is a beautiful and unique place with so many natural and cultural opportunities. Sometimes just watching the sunset is entertainment enough for her. Stephanie’s life is shared with her husband and son and many wonderful friends and family around the country. Reading books to her son is one of her favorite things to do and she has many suggestions for entertaining read aloud books. Stephanie also loves to cook, read, swim, bike, hike, play with her dogs and visit family (usually all of these with her son in tow). Mostly, she can be found gazing at the mountains or stars with much appreciation for this place she calls home.

  • Brian (Coach) Van Nevel was born in Chicago, IL and moved to Taos at the age of ten. After graduating from Taos High School, he attended New Mexico State University where he received his degree in Physical Education and Recreation. He came back to Taos and spent four years working for the Town of Taos Recreation department. In 2000 he began teaching Physical Education at Taos Charter School and is an original staff member.

As the PE teacher, Brian thinks it’s important to get kids moving, develop motor skills, and learn lots of fun and new games. He also thinks it’s good just to get outside and go for a walk, which is why he does walking Wednesday every week. His philosophy is all about participation and effort. If you try and do your best, then you will succeed in his class.

In 2012, Brian got married to his lovely wife Alison McPartlon, and in 2014 they had a beautiful girl named Hadley.
